In my central Kentucky private practice as a clinical psychologist, I see adults and couples for psychotherapy.

Many of my clients are having a hard time coping with new life circumstances, such as becoming a parent, getting divorced, changing jobs, moving to a new area, losing a loved one, and so on. I prefer to see counseling clients in person and do not provide psychotherapy via the telephone or Internet.

Because I am not a physician, I cannot prescribe medication, but I can work with your doctor (or refer you to a good psychiatrist) if medication would benefit your treatment.

Therapeutic Style

I view clients with a ‘whole person’ perspective and treat them mind, body, and soul. For example, we might explore:
  • How to handle emotions well and think more positively (mind)
  • How to improve sleep and nutrition patterns (body)
  • How their particular faith practices could benefit them emotionally (soul)

As with any relationship, therapy works best when there is trust, mutual respect, and a sense of connection. A good working relationship is key, so I will call you prior to scheduling a counseling session in order to evaluate whether or not we are a good fit. If I’m not the right therapist for you to see, I can provide you with contact information for other recommended professionals in the central Kentucky area.

Each therapist has a unique style. My style is direct, active, and warm. I do not tend to sit back and say nothing. I have no problem giving specific advice and opinions when asked, and sessions tend to be focused on solutions, not problems. While at times it is important and useful to delve into the past, the focus tends to be more on the present. Pain, stress, and difficult times provide some of the best opportunities to create meaning and happiness.

Sometimes, clients need only one session focused on a particular problem. At other times, a deeper focus on breaking long-standing patterns is indicated. The average course of therapy is 12 to 20 sessions over 6 to 12 months. Many clients prefer to schedule visits every two weeks (instead of every week) to allow themselves time to work on the topics we discussed in session.

Over time, I have found that individuals with the following characteristics benefit most from our work together:

Fees & Insurance

My psychotherapy fee is $175 for a “fifty-minute hour”. I am considered an “out-of-network” provider for HMO or PPO insurance plans, such as Humana, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Bluegrass Family Health, etc. If you would like to use your insurance benefits, please call the mental health/substance abuse phone number or general information phone number printed on the back of your insurance card. Ask the representative about your “outpatient psychotherapy” benefits, including whether or not you have out-of-network coverage, deductibles, whether you have met any of your deductible this year, number of sessions allowed, how much of the fee they will pay, and if preauthorization is required prior to your first session. If you do not have out-of-network coverage, your insurance will not cover any of my fee.

Through generous donations from local churches and individuals, Interfaith Counseling Center offers scholarship funds for clients who are unable to pay the full fee. By completing a Fee Reduction Form, you may qualify for a fee as low as $110 an hour, depending on family size, income and financial situation.

The Interfaith Counseling Center accepts cash or checks; however, the ICC does not accept credit or debit cards. We ask that you pay your full fee at each visit. If you would like to use your insurance benefits, we can provide you with a form that you can mail into your insurance company. Unfortunately, medical insurance rarely covers marital counseling. If you have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through your employer, it might pay completely for several sessions of marital or individual counseling. Please contact your employer’s Human Resources department for more information.

  • Take responsibility for their own happiness
  • Offer and receive direct and honest feedback
  • Try new behaviors which may be uncomfortable
  • Show up on time and give sufficient notice if they need to cancel appointments

Most of the work occurs outside of counseling sessions and NO person (including a counselor) can “fix” another person.

It helps to have a sense of humor, honesty, authenticity, and integrity.

Most of my counseling clients have some sort of faith background, although I do accept counseling clients who have no particular interest in faith. I have found that clients who are willing to incorporate their faith into their treatment get better faster, but I also respect and enjoy working with clients who do not wish to discuss spiritual issues as part of counseling. I tailor my psycho-therapeutic interventions to each client’s individual needs.

Interfaith Counseling Center

My therapy practice is located at Interfaith Counseling Center in downtown Lexington, Kentucky.

The Center is located at 240 Rodes Avenue, which is situated between High Street and Maxwell Street, and can be accessed via Martin Luther King Boulevard. I prefer to see therapy clients in person and do not provide psychotherapy via the phone or Internet.
